Who killed Craigslist?
Craigslist has been one of a kid for years and literally has become an internet phenomenon, but is it possible that that could change now that Walmart Classifieds has launched.
According to Crunchbase , Craigslist is a supremely popular listings site. Craigslist was founded by Craig Newmark in March, and then expanded to the major metropolitan cities in August 2000. As of February 2008, Craigslist now covers 450 in 50 US States and 50 Countries. Walmart Classifieds will not launch free listings that will cover the same categories newspapers, magazines and of course Craigslist does, from job offers to pets and garage sales to dating posts. The service will be powered by Oodle; Oodle is an organization that reorganizes listings from around the web and makes them easily searchable by different categories, attributes, and location, according to Crunchbase. Walmart is most likely working with this organization to help generate advertising impressions and page views.
Trendhunter reveals that, “Walmart Classifieds quietly went live last week, but although they have a huge brand name backing them and little publicity to date, they’ll have to come up with something pretty clever to compete with Craigslist’s 30 million uniques.”
